14. Toile Fabric Matting for Picture Frames

Elevate your artwork, botanical prints, or family black-and-white portraits by replacing standard white paper mat boards with custom fabric-wrapped matting using elegant toile. Standard picture frames instantly take on a custom framer quality when the inner mat exhibits rich, subtle fabric pattern work. The classic narrative designs in toile draw the eye inward while adding soft texture without overpowering the central art or photograph.
Remove the mat board from your chosen picture frame. Lay it down on the back of your toile fabric, ensuring your pattern alignment is straight relative to the mat window opening. Cut the fabric so it extends about an inch beyond the outer edges of the board, as well as an inch inside the photo opening. Using double-sided tape or fabric glue, wrap the fabric edges tightly around the outer frame of the mat board. For the inner window, make diagonal slits at all four corners, fold the flaps backward, and secure them flat against the back. Reassemble your frame with your artwork centered inside for a stunning visual upgrade.
