18. Custom Toile Fabric Light Switch Covers
Do not let plain plastic outlet covers and light switch plates break the design flow of your carefully decorated rooms. Wrapping switch plates in toile fabric is one of the easiest, most affordable micro-diy projects you can undertake, yet it provides a seamless, custom-built look that ties your decor together effortlessly. It is ideal for nursery rooms, powder rooms, or master bedrooms where attention to detail is paramount.
Unscrew the plastic switch covers from your wall. Cut a swatch of toile fabric roughly one inch larger than the plate on all sides, taking care to position a tiny motif (like a leaf, bird, or tiny flower) right in the center face of the plate. Apply a layer of decoupage glue over the front of the plastic plate, smooth the fabric down over it, and wrap the excess edges around to the back side, gluing them down flat. Carefully use a utility knife to cut an X shape through the toggle switch opening and screw holes, folding the small fabric flaps back. Once dry, screw the plate back onto the wall for a polished finishing touch.
