20. Decoupage Toile Wooden Coasters and Trays

20

Turn plain unfinished wooden serving trays into breathtaking tea-serving showpieces by decoupaging toile fabric onto the interior bottom surface. A toile-lined wooden tray adds instant sophistication when serving coffee, breakfast in bed, or evening cocktails to guests. It bridges the gap between natural wood warmth and polished, classic textile design.

Begin by sanding your wooden tray smoothly and painting the outer rim and side walls in a coordinating shade of chalk paint—such as cream, dusty rose, or slate blue. Measure the inside flat bottom of the tray precisely and cut your toile fabric to fit the exact dimensions. Apply a heavy, even coat of Mod Podge or wood craft glue to the tray bottom, then carefully roll the fabric onto the wood from one end to the other to avoid trapping air pockets. Press flat with a craft brayer or smooth card. Once dry, coat the fabric surface with three to four coats of polyurethane sealer or clear epoxy resin to make the tray water-resistant and completely wipeable for daily use.
